Lucy’s Class Notes
What are useful ways you utilize a surfboard? I hope you’re not thinking surfing, because we want new, innovative, out-of-box, answers only! We all brought in random everyday objects and brainstormed new ways we could use these objects. Other than a surfboard, we analyzed a spoon, brick, floss, a mask, a juicer, and much more! This activity has not only broadened our perspective on how we can look at things that surround us daily and see how they can be used creatively, but it has also instilled in us a new motivation to look beyond the obvious way of how to incorporate something. This will be invaluable as we begin to curate our own Hayground Museum.
In accordance with our focus on planning out the Hayground Museum, we embarked on a mini-workshop series called Curation & Creativity, offered with Guild Hall. This series was designed to equip us with the vocabulary and strategies of curators, which are essential for our museum project. During these workshops, we experienced what it is like to have several hundred pieces of art that need to be placed in a museum! We came to the realization that placement plays a vital role in how museum visitors experience and interpret the work. Because of this experience, the Hayground Museum curators are now ready to deliberate on how to use/format Hayground artifacts.
Aside from our museum program development, we are also approaching the climax of our read-aloud, The One and Only Ivan. We are learning a lot about each character and have become fully invested in what their futures hold in the book! The book explores animal rights and promotes respect for all animals. This exploration has not only inspired each student to pick an animal of their choice to do animal research, but it has also significantly increased our knowledge and understanding of their amazing qualities and ways we can protect them!
