Emily's Class Notes
Earlier this month, our class studied the poetry of Langston Hughes in preparation for Soul Food Night. While reading poems from The Block, we were captivated by the words and images that portrayed the life and energy of a lively Harlem neighborhood. Students collaborated to create a large multilayered collage inspired by the work of Romare Bearden using magazines and different types of papers. While working, we listened to the sounds of jazz and blues that were influential during this time period. Our class recited the poem Harlem Night Song which joyfully depicts a beautiful night in Harlem walking under the moonlight with a loved one.
After months of counting down, our class was eager to celebrate the 100th day of school! We dedicated
and participated in activities, projects, games, and centers that incorporated math and writing skills. Students decorated, built towers using 100 objects, read and wrote 100 words, and completed tasks in 100 seconds. Writing prompts during Writer's Workshop included “I wish I had 100..." and “I would not want 100..."
Alice Hope visited our class and students were eager to contribute to the collaborative can tab project that Hayground students have been working on over the last few months. The project focuses on the concept of an eon and the unquantifiable. Each can tab represents one day and students were challenged to string roughly 100 “days”. We look forward to future visits with Alice.
