Lucy's Class Notes
Lucy’s group has been keeping busy with curating the Hayground Museum! After meeting with experts in the curating field, the students developed ideas on what the layout of their museum should look like. They have been discussing what materials they will need for different aspects of their museum and how Hayground history should be displayed. They are excited to develop a Hayground archive! The students analyzed a Hayground scrapbook made by Hayground students that showcased the beginnings of Hayground. They could see photos dated to 1997 and use them to compare what it was like to be a Hayground student back then to what it is like now. They were amazed to see how certain traditions and values are upheld today!
Lucy’s group also collaborated with Julie's class to study gospel music. Through multiple resources, they learned about the origins of gospel music, important figures, the correlation between gospel music and the civil rights movement, the evolution of women as preachers, and the influence gospel music had on other popular music styles. Students let their creativity fully bloom when it came time to think of their Soul Food Night presentation. They listened to each other’s ideas on sharing the information in a way that would be fun for the event. The students were planning, managing their time efficiently, and dealing with challenges as a group.
Lucy’s students also had an opportunity to become engineers and learn about simple machines. They investigated using Legos to synthesize how simple machines work in real life.
