Marybeth and Helene's Class Notes
Happy new year to all! 2019 is off to a busy and productive start. After a a brief hiatus during our residency with Shakespeare & Company, we are back to work on the next phase of our activism project. The children have each selected the name of an activist to research and paint a portrait of. Soon our classroom walls will be filled with the images of a host of change makers, from Malala Yousafzai to Harvey Milk, and Gloria Steinem to Malcom X, to name a few. We look forward to seeing the childrens beautiful renditions of these influential historical figures.
We are also learning about the writing process from drafting through publication. The children are working through various stages of the process, with some completing first drafts, some typing, and others revising their stories. Each child will eventually craft a beautiful handmade book to showcase their work, which will be submitted to the Hampton Library for their annual “Budding Authors” event in the early spring.
This past week Hayground launched it's residency with scientist Teagan Davies. Between now and June, each child will have a chance to work with her as part of a small group of student scientists. The science program has become a part of the studio and kitchen rotation, where some children will work in the science lab for a full day each week, for six weeks straight, and then trade places with their classmates in kitchen or studio. The children are excited about this new aspect of their school life.
